Water Reservoirs

Reservoirs are designed to allow the movement of water to be controlled. These are man made structures that are strategically put into place. Some people don’t realize that the lakes that flow to and from the reservoirs are also man made. A close eye is kept on the level of water coming into the reservoir. There are employees that are in place to check the levels of water at a reservoir. They are responsible for opening and closing the gates when necessary. This is often a process that requires several people to control at one time. This helps to prevent the wrong people from getting into the control area. These gates are controlled from underneath the reservoir though in areas most people don’t even realize exist.

Water reservoirs are commonly referred to as dams. Some of them are small structures while others are unbelievably large. Most have bridges on them where people can drive across the water. Some have scenic overlooks as well so you can take pictures and gaze at the water down below. You will notice there is always a high embankment around the reservoir that is made from rocks.

This embankment helps to keep the bottom of the reservoir from being damaged due to the force of the water as it flows through it. Most water reservoirs are made from heavy concrete and clay.
